A FORMER police officer has denied causing grievous bodily harm after tackling a suspected shoplifter outside a busy shopping centre.

Lorne Castle, 47, was charged after making a citizen’s arrest on Daniel Meyrick as he allegedly tried to flee with £450 worth of Nike goods.

Pictures appeared to show Castle restraining Meyrick on the floor while waiting for his former police colleagues to arrive and arrest him.

The incident occurred last June – just weeks after he left his role as a Police Constable for Dorset Police.

Castle today denied causing grievous bodily harm during the altercation outside Castlepoint shopping centre in Bournemouth, Dorset.

He appeared at Reading Magistrates Court and spoke only to confirm his name, address, date of birth and to deny the charge.

His actions were described at the time as a “citizen’s arrest”, but the prosecution allege that he was “not a good Samaritan”.

Kathleen O’Callaghan, prosecuting, said Mr Meyrick “suffered a fractured hip which required surgery, pins inserted” in the altercation with Castle.

She said: “Mr Castle maintains his hold on Mr Meyrick for 20 minutes to half an hour, obviously at that point he’s got a fractured hip.”

Castle also suffered some injuries during the incident, the court heard.

He will remain on bail with a condition of not contacting Mr Meyrick, to next appear at Reading Crown Court on June 23.
