The Asian Athletics Association has selected Sector 7 Sports Complex, Chandigarh, to host the 2027 Asian Relays. The decision brings top relay teams from across Asia to the city’s premier sports facility.This will be the first major event at Sector 7 Sports Complex since the installation of a synthetic track and the hosting of a couple of Grand Prix events. The Asian Relays are scheduled for May 2027. This also marks the first major international sporting championship in Chandigarh since the Asian Rowing Championship in 1989. The decision was taken during the council meeting of Asian Athletics Association held in Hong Kong.Chandigarh’s bid was presented by Mandip Singh Brar, Home Secretary, Chandigarh Administration, along with Ravinder Chaudhary, Director, Competitions, Athletics Federation of India, who has also been associated with the local athletics association.“I am truly delighted that Chandigarh has been chosen to host the Asian Relays 2027. This is a proud moment for the entire city and a strong recognition of Chandigarh’s growing identity as a centre for international sporting events. The City Beautiful is fully prepared to welcome athletes and guests from across Asia. The Chandigarh Administration will continue to work dedicatedly to strengthen sports infrastructure and nurture a vibrant sporting culture for our youth,” said Gulab Chand Kataria, Administrator, UT.Gen Dahlan Jumaan Al-Hamad, President of Asian Athletics Association, congratulated the Home Secretary on Chandigarh being awarded the hosting rights. On behalf of the Chandigarh Administration, the Home Secretary presented the iconic Open Hand memento to the President and expressed gratitude to the Asian Athletics Association and the Athletics Federation of India for their trust in Chandigarh.Earlier in March this year, senior Asian Athletics Association officials inspected the sports complex.Secretary-General Shugurman and Technical Director CK Valson conducted a detailed assessment of the city’s sports infrastructure. The delegation inspected the synthetic athletic track and other facilities essential for hosting an international event.
