Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu wants students to speak their minds, and the students are not disappointing him. While interacting with students at Government Senior Secondary School, Nerwa, in Shimla district, a Class 10 student asked the Chief Minister why there was no qualifying exam to become an MLA when such exams were mandatory in almost every other profession.Amid loud cheers from his schoolmates, the student said some sort of exam was needed because only the rich could afford to contest elections now. When the Chief Minister replied that the public takes an MLA’s exam every five years, the student stood his ground. “But sir, political parties should conduct some exam before giving tickets to candidates. They must have some knowledge of the field they are entering,” he said. The Chief Minister has been visiting government schools recently affiliated with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for open interactions with students. During the interaction, he announced Rs 5 crore for the construction of a new school building.Meanwhile, a Class 10 student asked the CM why mid-day meals were provided only up to Class 8. “Aren’t we children, sir? Why can’t mid-day meals be provided up to Class 12?” she asked. The CM called it a good suggestion and said he would look into extending the scheme to Class 12.Primary school girls also complained about unclean washrooms and a shortage of water. Other students drew the Chief Minister’s attention to problems in the area, including bad roads and lack of health facilities. The Chief Minister later had lunch with the schoolchildren. Following its affiliation with CBSE, enrolment at Nerwa school has increased considerably. From 959 students last year, the number in the current academic session has reached 1,300.
