The would-be terrorist’s concert plot was thwarted, but it still lead to three of the pop superstar’s concerts in the country being cancelled.

Beran’s twisted motive was to become famous, court psychiatrist Peter Hoffman testified on the trial’s final day.

Hoffman told the court: “The desire to become famous drives many people in society to remarkable feats.

“This is a phenomenon that is incomprehensible to many on a human level. But it’s not an illness.”

The psychiatrist confirmed that Beran was sound of mind and did not meet the requirements to be sectioned.

Psychotherapist Dorothea Stella-Kaiser also analysed the 21-year-old, noting: “He didn’t present himself as antisocial at all. My observation is that he engaged in a very strong positive self-presentation.”

But online, Beran would discuss the most acts imaginable, including killing and torture.

He would attempt to act out these fantasies twice.

Beran laid out his plan to attack Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium in a shocking confession.

“I wanted to arm myself as much as possible so I could come out looking like a hero,” he said in a statement.

“The idea was to drive a truck into a building somewhere. With weapons, bombs, and knives.”

Beran devoted himself to bomb-making, and cops seized a nearly functional explosive from his house.

His defence lawyer Anna Mair said: “Beran is not a leader. He is not an ideological mastermind. We cannot comprehend what it’s like when someone is caught in a radicalisation process.

“The world Beran lived in back then consisted only of friend and foe – there was nothing in between.”
