The Election Commission is gearing up for the upcoming special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Punjab, but official records reveal that Ludhiana is facing a major challenge with lakhs of unmapped voters in the district.According to an agenda prepared for a review meeting chaired by the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Ludhiana has a total 26.90 lakh voters. Of these, only 20.03 lakh have been mapped under the pre-SIR exercise conducted by matching electoral rolls of 2003 and 2025. This translates into a mapping percentage of 74.46, well below the state average of 84.46 per cent. Urban Assembly segments have recorded an even lower mapping average of 58 per cent, compared to 79 per cent in rural constituencies. The data shows that as many as 6,91,695 voters remain unmapped across the district, raising concerns about the accuracy and completeness of electoral rolls ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The highest number of unmapped electors has been reported from Sahnewal (84,357), followed by Ludhiana East (81,457), Ludhiana South (77,651) and Gill (72,805). Even urban constituencies such as Ludhiana West, North and Atam Nagar have reported thousands of unmapped voters.Officials have also identified 4,16,937 electoral anomalies during the exercise. Ludhiana East tops the list with 52,075 anomalous entries, followed by Ludhiana North with 46,812, Gill with 43,615, Sahnewal with 42,254 and Ludhiana West with 36,644. Election officials will now have to verify these entries before the final revision process begins. The report also highlights a massive number of voters falling under the ASDD (absent, shifted, dead and duplicate) category. Officials have identified 44,800 absent voters, 30,314 shifted voters, 14,713 deceased voters and 48,083 possible duplicate voters. Besides these, another 5.66 lakh have been categorised under “other” discrepancies requiring verification.Election officials have already forwarded constituency-wise and booth-wise lists of unmapped voters to the Punjab CEO and have planned special verification drives. At a special camp on June 7, booth-level officers (BLOs) will assist voters and share details of unmapped electors with political parties for verification.
