A four-day wet spell over north-west India with widespread showers over the past 24 hours has overcome the significant rain deficit in Punjab for the month of May. Rains, which were below the long period average (LPA) by 37 per cent till May 29, are now surplus by 25 per cent.A continuous well spell over Punjab and Haryana is expected till June 6, with isolated and scattered rains likely at some places, a bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department on May 31 said. Earlier, a three-day dry period was predicted from June 2-4.Light to moderate rainfall occurred at most places in Punjab and Haryana, while thunderstorm and gusty winds were experienced at isolated places in the states. Rainfall at a few places has been significantly above normal.From May 1 till the morning of May 31, Punjab received 21.6 mm rain compared to the LPA of 17.3 mm for this period. The seasonal rain in the state since March 1 is above the LPA by 22 per cent.Barring Moga, all districts in the state received varying amounts of rain over the past 24 hours. Nawanshahar was the wettest district in the state with 33.7 mm rain, followed by Ludhiana with 25.7 mm and Gurdaspur with 22.6 mm. Fatehgarh Sahib, Jalandhar, Patiala and Ropar were other districts that received more than 10 mm rain.Seasonally, rainfall continues to be below the LPA in seven districts – Partiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar Kapurthala, Mansa and Mukutsar, with the shortfall ranging from nine per cent to 61 per cent.In Haryana, the wettest areas during the past 24 hours were Panchkula with 10.6 mm rain, Kurukshetra with 10.3 mm and Karnal with 10.1 mm. Palwan and Charkhi Dadri remained dry.In May, Haryana received 20.8 mm rain against the LPA of 20.4 mm, making it just two percent above the LPA, while during the season, it received 52.6 mm rain against the LPA of 45 mm, accounting for a surplus of 17 percent. Rainfall in eight districts in Haryana – Yamunanagar, Sonipat, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehbad, Faridabad and Ambala has been below the LPA during the entire season.Temperatures in both states remained well below normal. The highest maximum temperature in Punjab during the past 24 hours was 34.5 degrees Celsius at Bathinda, while the lowest minimum temperature was 18 degrees Celsius, also at Bathinda. In Haryana, the highest maximum temperature was 36.9 degrees Celsius at Hisar and the lowest minimum temperature was 18 degrees Celsius at Ambala.
