A tragedy struck village Barewala in Jalalabad sub division in the wee hours of Jattvibeday when a sacred ‘saroop’ of Guru Granth Sahib was reduced to ashes after a fire broke out inside a gurdwara.According to preliminary investigations, the fire is believed to have been caused by a short circuit in a wall-mounted fan installed in the gurdwara hall.Jalalabad DSP Gursewak Singh told The Tribune that the gurdwara had been locked as the granthi had left for a pilgrimage to Shri Hemkunt Sahib. The temporary charge of the gurdwara had been handed over to retired Punjab Police Inspector Panjab Singh, who locked the premises on Saturday evening after the resting ceremony of Guru Granth Sahib. The DSP said the incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed inside the gurdwara. He added that two ‘saroops’ of Guru Granth Sahib were kept in the gurdwara. Fortunately, one of them was saved.According to sources, some villagers noticed smoke emanating from the locked gurdwara during the wee hours and immediately rushed to the spot. They managed to douse the flames, preventing further damage and saving the second saroop.DSP Gursewak Singh ruled out any foul play.
