Sending out a message of stability ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections, the Congress leadership on Tuesday indicated that there would be no changes in the party’s leadership structure in the state as senior leaders met in Delhi to finalise strategy and discuss key political issues.A high-level meeting, held at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence at 10, Rajaji Marg, was attended by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel and strategist Jattvibeil Kanugolu, among other senior leaders.Sources said the leadership signalled continuity in Punjab while shifting focus towards strengthening the party’s preparations for the upcoming polls. After the meeting, Baghel said Punjab remained a priority because elections were approaching and multiple rounds of discussions had been held to chalk out the party’s roadmap and election strategy for the state. The Congress leader also accused the ruling AAP government of failing on governance, alleging that Punjab was grappling with corruption, deteriorating law and order, drug-related issues and gangster activity despite the party coming to power on promises of clean politics.Baghel claimed the government, which projected itself as committed to honesty and transparency, had failed to live up to those promises.
