A key survey report on the state of affairs of Punjab Congress by the party political strategist Jattvibeil Kanugolu to the top party leaders on Tuesday has set the ball rolling for much-needed mutual coordination and unity among the faction-ridden state unit. The report was presented during a high-level meeting attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, general secretary KC Venugopal and Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel.Party insiders said the report categorically stated that the Congress could win the poll only with unity, drawing lessons from its success in Kerala.Baghel later reiterated that there would be no change in the state leadership structure. However, sources indicated that Rahul Gandhi is expected to hold another round of meetings with Punjab Congress leaders before finalising key decisions. To avoid repeating the mistakes of the 2022 Assembly elections, the party leadership has decided to reconstitute important committees, including the manifesto, campaign and election committees, with an aim to check factionalism.Kanugolu, credited with scripting Congress victories in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, is now focusing on Punjab. The high command has made it clear to state leaders that it would not succumb to pressure for any change of guard, citing the successful models of Karnataka and Kerala. In Friday’s meeting, Rahul Gandhi reportedly told Punjab leaders that aspiring for higher posts was acceptable, but the priority must be to strengthen the party and bring it back to power. “The leadership will extend full support to strengthen the party and its campaigns,” sources quoted him as saying, adding that decisions on state leadership would be taken by the top brass.Unity bus yatraTo drive home the message of unity, the Congress is planning to replicate the Karnataka model by launching a ‘Congress Unity Bus Yatra’. Top leaders are expected to travel across the state in a specially designed bus, covering maximum constituencies. The proposal was discussed in the recent meeting with the top five Punjab leaders. A senior party leader said the final plan is yet to be finalised, including whether Rahul Gandhi would flag off or join the yatra.
