Now the £150m renovation is under way with the removal of the banqueting suite in the west stand.

Members of the council, club executives, the Leeds United Foundation and legends Stuart Dallas, Tony Dorigo and Eddie Gray were all in attendance to mark the occasion.

Elland Road, the West Yorkshire side’s home since their inception in 1919, currently holds just under 38,000.

But the ambitious plans will expand the capacity to 53,000, moving it above Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium as the fifth largest ground in England.

That will see both the west and north stands expanded, while alterations will be made to the south stand too.

The work, which Leeds hope to complete by 2030, will transform Elland Road into a Uefa Category 4 stadium and place it among the elite venues in European football.

That will allow the club to bid to host major international tournaments, while also generating significant cultural and economic value for the Leeds City Region.

Over 32,000 supporters are currently on Leeds’ season ticket waiting list.
