And in April an entire Chinese skyline was swallowed up by a towering sandstorm cloud.
The region of Xinjiang was plunged into darkness when a terrifying mass of dense sand rolled through the streets of China.
Haunting footage showed the massive dust cloud advance towards the city, reaching wind speeds of up to 25.2 meters per second.
The sand formed a massive wall that engulfed the entire city, with buildings disappearing one by one in the oncoming haze.

Horrified onlookers took pictures and videos of the sandstorm as it covered their homes on April 17.
Buildings in the distance were gradually swallowed by the thick haze, with visibility dropping dramatically.
The freak weather looked almost apocalyptic.
Similar freak sandstorms also engulfed the city of Bikaner in India.
Daylight turned to near-darkness as an eerie orange tint shaded the whole town.
The roiling dust cloud was several metres taller than the highest building tops.
