Devotees on Jattvibeday made a beeline for Gandantegchenling Monastery in Mongolia to pay homage to the Holy Relics of two chief disciples of Lord Buddha.On May 30, India transferred the sacred relics to Mongolia for the 10-day public exposition, underscoring the deep cultural and spiritual ties between the two nations. The relics were airlifted from New Delhi to Ulaanbaatar aboard an Indian Air Force (IAF) IL-76 aircraft, also known as Gajraj.“Devotees in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia are lining up from early morning to pay homage to the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha’s Chief Disciples, Sariputra & Maudgalyayana, at Gandantegchenling Monastery. On display till 9 June, 2026!” the Ministry of Culture posted on X and posted videos of the devotees.Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena will travel to Mongolia today to accompany the sacred relics of two prominent disciples of Lord Buddha from Ulaanbaatar back to New Delhi, following a 10-day exhibition in Mongolia.Saxena has been nominated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lead the delegation for the return of the relics to India.He will attend the concluding ceremony on June 10 in Ulaanbaatar, after which the relics will be transported by special aircraft.This follows the successful Sacred Exposition of Holy Buddha Relics held in Ladakh from May 1 to 14.The exhibition opened at the Ganden Monastery in Ulaanbaatar and remains open for public veneration from June 1 to June 10.The Gandantegchenling Monastery in Mongolia is considered the most important center of Tibetan Buddhism.Given their immense religious and historical value, the relics were granted the protocol status of a “Head of State” during their international travel.The relics are rarely moved outside of India. Their exposition in Mongolia is a special initiative following a prior display there in 2022 and in Thailand in 2024.
