It comes amid a wave of Russian drone airspace incursions across Europe – stoking further fears that Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine is spilling across Nato’s borders.

The drone sighting on Monday sparked an air threat alert for Latvia’s eastern regions bordering Russia and Belarus.

Local residents were warned to stay indoors as Nato jets shot down the rogue UAV.

Last month, Nato fighter jets were scrambled after Latvia claimed at least one drone was detected in its airspace.

This ordeal came just days after a similar incident in Lithuania.

Ukraine has stepped up its long-range drone strikes on Russia in recent months, including operations around the Baltic Sea region.

Several Ukrainian military drones have strayed into the airspace of Nato members Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

Kyiv has since apologised for the incursions, blaming Russia for jamming guidance systems, pushing drones off course.

Last week, a Ukrainian sea drone on a Black Sea mission was jammed by Russia – before it lost control and exploded at a major Romanian port.

The maritime blast rocked the huge Port of Constanta, sparking a red alert and a desperate scramble to locate any more dangerous explosives.
