ROY KEANE has revealed he buried the hatchet with Bruno Fernandes after the pundit’s comments irked the Man United star.

Keane took issue with the playmaker after initially misquoting him following United’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest last month.

The former Red Devil told The Overlap that Fernandes said he “probably should have shot but I made them passes” while chasing the Premier League assist record.

He added: “Wow. How can your mindset of a footballer be going into a match to be about an individual record? He won’t be winning trophies, not with that mindset of the team.”

But Fernandes actually said: “There were probably moments today when I should have passed instead of shot.”

The Portugal star later criticised Keane on the Diary of a CEO podcast and accused him of lying.

Fernandes said Keane “put words in my mouth”, adding: “What I don’t like is when people lie about things and [in] this case that you said about Roy Keane basically what he said is a lie.”

But Keane has now revealed the pair settled the feud over the phone and admitted his words “didn’t come across properly”.

He told the Overlap, via Sky Bet: “There was a reaction to what we said after the podcast a few weeks ago, with what I said about Bruno Fernandes, and he reached out to me, wanted to chat, so I called him and we did have a lovely chat.

“We had a chat about a bit of everything. When we do podcasts or games, sometimes you think you say something afterwards, you’re trying to communicate something that doesn’t come across properly and people get upset.

“And he wanted to speak to me and we had a nice, mature conversation. It was a lovely chat.

“I like having boundaries with players as I don’t want to speak to them every few weeks.

“But every now and again, a player might reach out, so I think it was good that I spoke to Bruno because there was a lot reported and he’s a big player for United.

“I like the idea of communicating, having a proper conversation. I really enjoyed it and hopefully he did too.”

Fernandes, 31, did end up breaking the assist record, claiming the landmark with his 21st assist on the final day in United’s 3-0 win over Brighton.

He leapfrogged Thierry’s Henry and Kevin De Bruyne after their joint-efforts of 20 in the 2002-03 and 2019-20 campaign respectively.

It was arguably his best season in a United shirt as he also scored nine times and helped the team finish third.

The United skipper came close to leaving Old Trafford last summer amid links to Saudi Arabia.

He signed a new deal in 2024 that runs until next summer.
