As nearly 1.3 crore students across China sat for the Gaokao, the country’s high-stakes university entrance examination, Beijing used the occasion to spotlight what it described as a seamless national effort, a move that appeared to carry an implicit message for India, where competitive examinations have recently come under intense scrutiny.On Wednesday, the Chinese Embassy in India highlighted the scale and organisation behind the Gaokao, drawing a comparison with India’s JEE and NEET entrance examinations. The remarks came at a time when India’s examination system remains under the spotlight following the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. A re-examination is scheduled for June 21.In a post on X, Chinese Embassy spokesperson Yu Jing described the Gaokao as “the world’s largest exam” and said it was equivalent to “India’s JEE and NEET rolled into one”.“China’s Gaokao, the world’s largest exam and India’s equivalent of JEE and NEET rolled into one, was conducted smoothly for 1.3 crore students in just two days,” Yu Jing said.The spokesperson also highlighted the extraordinary measures taken across China to facilitate the examination. “Factories paused. This year’s examination was conducted over two days and saw nearly 13 million candidates appear across the country.According to reports cited by the embassy’s remarks, authorities-imposed traffic restrictions around examination centres, arranged special transport facilities for students and, in some regions, reduced factory operations to minimise noise during examination hours.While the Chinese Embassy did not directly refer to controversies surrounding examinations in India, the timing and nature of the comparison drew attention. The emphasis on the smooth conduct of an examination involving nearly 1.3 crore candidates came amid continuing debate in India over examination management and integrity.The comparison was notable because the Gaokao combines university admissions into a single national examination, whereas India’s engineering and medical admissions are conducted through separate tests. NEET annually attracts more than 20 lakh candidates, while JEE Main sees around 15 lakh aspirants. Even together, the candidate pool remains substantially lower than that of the Gaokao.For students on both sides of the border, however, the stakes are strikingly similar. Years of preparation often culminate in a single examination that can shape future educational opportunities and career paths.By showcasing how the country mobilised to support millions of candidates, Beijing projected the efficiency and scale of its examination system. In doing so, it also appeared to draw an unspoken contrast with the challenges that have periodically surfaced in India’s own entrance examination framework.
