The Congress on Thursday announced a nationwide agitation against the BJP-led government, accusing it of failing on issues such as inflation, unemployment, paper leaks and farmers’ concerns. It further alleged that the ruling party had moved from “vote chori” to “seat chori”.The decision to stage the protest was taken at a three-hour meeting of the Congress top brass – including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, general secretaries and state unit chiefs.Addressing the media after the meeting, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said the party would begin a mass movement within the next two to three months, with protests planned at the national, state and district levels.“The country is facing serious economic challenges. Fuel prices are rising, unemployment has reached alarming levels while students are struggling due to repeated paper leaks. Every household is feeling the pressure of inflation. These are the issues affecting people, but the government has shown no accountability,” Venugopal said.He also questioned the Election Commission’s handling of the nomination process for the Rajya Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh, alleging unequal treatment of candidates.Venugopal claimed that Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination was rejected despite submitting all required documents, while NDA-backed Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani was allowed to rectify errors in his nomination papers.“Two candidates faced different standards despite the same election authority being involved. We will take this fight forward both politically and legally,” he said.Venugopal also rejected reports of a possible merger between the Congress and the TMC, calling the speculation baseless.Meanwhile, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the BJP would not be able to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, despite its efforts.Ramesh said the ruling party’s attempts to bring leaders from other parties would not help it achieve the numbers required to pass the delimitation Bill.“Whatever steps the Home Minister takes, the BJP will not get the two-thirds majority needed in the Lok Sabha. Their ambition will not be fulfilled,” he said.Earlier, Rahul Gandhi, in a post on X, accused the BJP and the Election Commission of working together to influence electoral outcomes. He alleged that while Congress nominee Meenakshi Natarajan was disqualified over what he described as a minor objection, BJP-backed candidate Parimal Nathwani was given an opportunity to correct discrepancies.Gandhi said the Opposition would continue to raise the issue and alleged that such actions were aimed at affecting the electoral process rather than competing in elections.
