Strong winds and heavy rainfall that swept across Punjab on Wednesday caused breaches in nearly three dozen distributaries and minor canals, affecting agricultural land and disrupting normal life across several districts.Although no major crop loss has been reported, paddy nurseries, green fodder and moong crops suffered damage in many areas. The weather disturbance also led to widespread power outages, fallen trees and damage to electricity infrastructure.According to the Department of Water Resources, around 35 breaches occurred in canals and minor channels across the state. Officials said nearly half of these breaches had already been repaired, while the remaining were expected to be closed by Saturday. A senior official explained that strong winds uprooted trees, many of which fell into canals, obstructing water flow and causing overflow that led to breaches. One of the most significant incidents occurred near Ramiana village, where the Jaitu distributary was breached, flooding approximately 800 acres of farmland.Other affected water channels include the Kotbhai distributary, where two breaches were reported. Several other distributaries and minors, including Phul, Mudki, Ladhuka, Pandori, Ablu, Kotli and Bhana, were also damaged. The storm, which reportedly originated from Pakistan side, caused considerable destruction in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Bathinda and Mansa. Power supply was severely affected at several places.
