Ludhiana couple’s dream realised in daughter Harpreet’s journey to IIT Guwahati

After The Tribune highlighted the plight of Harpreet, the daughter of a daily wager from Sanhewal who secured admission to IIT Guwahati but was unable to deposit the fee, support has poured in from corporates, IAS officers, political leaders and citizens alike. The story has struck a chord across Punjab, with offers of assistance continuing to pour in from all quarters.Like every aspiring engineer, Harpreet dreamt of studying at an IIT. For her, securing admission to IIT Guwahati was the culmination of years of hard work against overwhelming odds. After that, my family had no money left for the IIT fee. That was when my teachers started reaching out to people for help,” said Harpreet.It was Harpreet’s mother, Kuldeep Kaur, who remained the driving force behind her daughter’s journey. A Class seven dropout herself, Kuldeep always encouraged Harpreet to study hard and become financially independent, hoping her daughter would achieve the dreams she could not.Harpreet’s father, Ram Sarup, studied till Class five. Today, both parents share a single dream — to see their children succeed in life.The family home in Sanhewal was filled with joy on Saturday. Kuldeep prepared ‘matar paneer’, while Harpreet’s siblings made a welcome card for their sister. Harpreet, who is currently undergoing a one-year HCL TechBee course in Noida, is returning home to meet Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain.“I have seen generations born in poverty and die in poverty — my grandmother, my mother and now me. I wanted this cycle to end with me. I did not want my daughters to go through the same hardships,” said Kuldeep. “Boys can step out and see the world but girls can truly stand on their own only if they are educated and financially independent.”Recalling the experience that shaped her outlook on life, Kuldeep said it was her father’s battle with cancer that changed everything.“We tried our best to arrange money for his treatment, but we could not save him. That was when I realised how important financial security is. I never wanted my children to experience that helplessness. That is why I have always encouraged them to study hard and become financially independent,” she said.Ram Sarup said he was immensely proud of his daughter.“She has made us proud. We have always given equal opportunities to our sons and daughter. Daughters are no less than sons and Harpreet has proved that,” he said.Harpreet’s siblings now look up to her as a role model.“We want to become like our didi,” they said in unison, their voices reflecting the hopes of a family determined to break free from the cycle of poverty.
