Rebel Akali leader and former SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur has disapproved of the statement made by former Akal Takht jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Behbal Kalan police firing case. She is the second leader from the Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) to speak out against the former jathedar for appearing before SIT.Her reaction came a day after former jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh, president of SAD (Punar Surjit), opposed Giani Raghbir Singh’s move to depose before SIT.Jagir Kaur even claimed that the jathedar was “playing into the hands of others”. Harpreet Singh, who was one of the five Sikh high priests when SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal was given religious punishment, said it was inappropriate to record statements. “The proceedings were part of our religious code and principles. They took place at Akal Takht and cannot be used as evidence,” he said.Jagir Kaur added, “The entire episode of December 2 was in the public domain and widely covered on television and in print. Why was he (Raghbir) required to appear before SIT? It is obligatory for a priest to keep a secret shared by a disciple. By appearing before SIT, former jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh has committed an act of disobedience,” she said, leaving it to the supreme temporal body of the Sikhs to take action. On December 2, 2024, Akal Takht — the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs — pronounced tankhah, or religious punishment, for former Punjab Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal from the ‘faseel’/podium of Akal Takht. In his statement to SIT, Giani Raghbir Singh reportedly said Badal had acknowledged responsibility for the Behbal Kalan firing during the proceedings.Notably, SAD leaders have urged Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj to take serious note of the matter and initiate appropriate action for the violation of Sikh ‘maryada’. They condemned Giani Raghbir Singh for violating the hukamnama of the Takht by using proceedings of the highest temporal seat in court-related cases.
