But disaster struck when a rock he was relying on for support suddenly broke away.
He reportedly lost his footing and fell hundreds of feet down the mountainside.
His climbing partner immediately raised the alarm, prompting a major rescue operation.
Mountain rescue teams, paramedics and two helicopters were dispatched to the scene.
Despite their efforts, the young man was pronounced dead.
Police have since launched an investigation into the exact circumstances of the fatal fall.
Sadly, it is not the first deadly mountain accident this year.
In June, a British woman died after plunging more than 1,650ft while hiking in the Pyrenees in northern Spain.
The 42-year-old fell from Balaitus Peak while crossing a popular route known as the Great Diagonal.
She died in front of her 53-year-old partner, who was uninjured.
Spanish police confirmed the victim was a British national who had been living in Finland.
A rescue helicopter was sent to the scene, but she was declared dead on the mountainside.
Her body was later flown to Zaragoza’s Forensic Medicine Institute for a post-mortem examination.
Investigators believe she may have slipped on snow during the descent, despite good weather conditions on the day.
