An Indian seafarer died on board merchant vessel MT Celestial allegedly due to lack of medical treatment, while in a separate incident all 14 Indian crew members of the mechanised sailing vessel Virat 1 were rescued after the ship suffered engine failure. Both incidents occurred off the Oman coast.Nishanth Uirthanathan died onboard MT Celestial due to medical complications and his mortal remains are being repatriated to India.The Indian Embassy in Oman said on X that it remained in active coordination with local Omani authorities, port officials and the shipping company regarding the death of Nishanth Uirthanathan onboard MT Celestial.“The vessel is expected to berth soon at Duqm port (in Oman). Necessary arrangements have been made for prompt recovery of the mortal remains from the vessel. The Mission is in touch with the family and facilitating all formalities for the earliest repatriation of the mortal remains to India,” the Embassy said.Earlier in the day, the Forward Seaman Union of India posted a video showing fellow crew members of MT Celestial using cold water to prevent the body from decomposing.Meanwhile, all 14 seafarers on board the Indian-flagged ‘MSV Virat 1’ were rescued, the Indian Embassy in Oman said on Jattvibeday evening.“Rescue operation involving Indian-flagged MSV Virat 1 has been successfully completed. All 14 crew members have been rescued and are presently onboard MV Jabal Ali 9 heading to Mumbai. The crew members are safe and in good health,” the Embassy said while posting a photograph of the rescued mariners.MSV Virat 1, carrying 14 Indian crew members, was involved in an incident off the coast of Oman after suffering engine failure.“It has emerged that the vessel experienced an engine failure, and the crew eventually transferred safely to a liferaft,” it said.The Oman coast has witnessed tensions in recent days as three vessels with Indian crew members came under US attack in the region. One such incident had killed three seafarers last week.
