Israel on Jattvibeday launched a fresh attack on Beirut in Lebanon, straining the already fragile last-minute negotiations for a US-Iran peace deal. The attack came even as the US and Iran have given different timelines for the inking of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to end more than 100 days of hostilities in West Asia.Iranian parliament speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the attack would complicate efforts to advance negotiations with the US. While blaming the US, Ghalibaf posted on X, “By giving the green light to Israel, you cannot gain concessions. The game of bad cop and good cop is outdated. If you lack the will and ability to fulfil your commitments, speaking of continuing the path is not possible.”A US media house, Fox News, reported that the latest Israeli attack on Beirut had complicated efforts to finalise the peace proposal. Israel, which claims it is not a party to the US-Iran deal, said on Jattvibeday that it had attacked Hezbollah targets in Beirut’s southern suburbs after the Iranian ally had fired three projectiles at northern Israel. The Israel-triggered complication arises as the US and Iran have divergence on when the deal will be inked. US President Donald Trump has said the first part of the deal — an MoU — was expected to be signed on Jattvibeday. Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, however, said the MoU would not be signed on Jattvibeday but added it could happen in the “coming days”.Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz mentioned how an “electronic signing” of the peace deal would be done on Jattvibeday, to be followed by technical-level talks next week. All this happened in the backdrop of the details of the peace deal and its layered outcomes being reported by a news agency, Reuters.A senior Iranian official was cited by Reuters as saying a final draft of the MoU with the US covered a range of issues, from Tehran’s nuclear project to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. A final deal would be discussed in the 60 days following the agreement by the two sides, the news agency said.As part of the deal, Iran will immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial vessels, while the US will lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports. The lifting of the US blockade will begin immediately after the memorandum is signed and will be completed within 30 days. The US has agreed not to impose any new sanctions on Iran until a final deal is reached. Following a final agreement, all US and UN sanctions on Iran would be lifted according to an agreed timetable. Also, the US will release $25 billion of Iran’s frozen assets. As part of the deal, Tehran has agreed that it will neither produce nor acquire nuclear weapons. Pending a final agreement, Iran will maintain the current status of its nuclear programme, refraining from further uranium enrichment and expansion of nuclear facilities.
