The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a fresh cycle of western disturbances, which will bring rainfall off and on from June 18 to 22 in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab.“This cycle of western disturbances will be of light to moderate intensity. It will have more impact in Haryana than in Punjab. The rainfall will be witnessed off and on from June 18 to June 22 in the region,” said Surender Paul, Director, IMD, Chandigarh.He added, “The day temperatures will likely remain stable in the region. However, Punjab will experience higher temperatures than Haryana. There is no sign of heat wave conditions developing in the region.”As per an IMD statement, a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from June 18 onwards, bringing isolated to scattered rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi. Also, gusty winds at 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated places.Deficient rainfallThe normal date of the onset of monsoon in Haryana and Punjab is June 30. However, from June 1 to 17, many districts have received deficient rainfall. Compared with the long-term average, Barnala and Hoshiapur received 79 per cent and 62 per cent less rainfall, respectivelySangrur (-58%), Rupnagar (-53%), SAS Nagar (-48%), Fatehgarh Sahib (-46%), Patiala (-42%), Mansa (-34%), Pathankot (-34%), and Kapurthala (-21%) received deficient rainfall.In Haryana, Ambala (-66%) has a large rainfall deficit. Yamunanagar (-52%), Kaithal (-47%), Panchkula (-38%), Rohtak (-24%), and Faridabad (-20%) received deficient rainfall.Chandigarh received only 35.3 mm of rainfall from June 1 to June 17, which is 40 per cent below the long-term average.
