WOMEN still prefer sex with a partner despite being more likely to ­climax if they pleasure themselves, a study says.

One in five said they have more chance of an orgasm with a partner than by masturbating or using a vibrator.

In contrast, nearly half climaxed more often alone.

But only orgasms from sex were found to boost overall satisfaction with their love lives.

Women in the study said it may be easier alone as there is less pressure, they did not worry about how they look and they have more control.

They also do not have to deal with men’s problems such as erectile dysfunction, finishing too soon — or just being bad in bed.

But many missed the intimacy, emotional connection and spontaneity of sex with someone else.

US sexpert Dr Jordan Rullo, from the University of Utah, said: “Masturbation is a fantastic tool for self-knowledge and stress relief and it can function as a ‘maintenance’ activity.

“But for many women, sexual satisfaction is deeply intertwined with the connection and shared intimacy of partnered sex.”

The study by period-tracking app Flo used data from 27,931 users.

Study author Yella Hewings-Martin, from Flo, writes in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour: “Partnered orgasms have a stronger association with sexual satisfaction.”

But co-author Dr Karen Blair, from Trent University in Canada, said: “We see clearly that the activities most likely to result in orgasm are those that prioritise clitoral stimulation.

“This validates the use of toys, hands, and oral stimulation as a key contributor to women’s pleasure.”
