COMMUTERS to Luton a major UK airport have been told to not travel as emergency services deal with the fallout of the Bedford train crash.

Numerous trains have been cancelled and routes revised as the horror crash wreaks chaos for people travelling to and from Luton airport.

National Rail have urged customers to seek alternative routes following severe disruption for a number of its services since two trains collided earlier today.

At least one person has died and more than 90 people were injured when a pair of East Midlands Railway services crashed just south of Bedford at 5.15pm.

As a result, the trainline is down with no trains running until at least the end of the day.

National Rail announced that no travel is possible between Bedford and London St Pancras International.

It has advised customers needing to make this journey to find alternative means of transport.

Trains from St Pancras to Leicester have also been cancelled or had their routes revised, with travellers advised to delay their travel until tomorrow.

The Great Northern service between London Kings Cross, Cambridge and Kings Lynn has also been disrupted.

Meanwhile trains on the Thameslink service between Brighton, Bedford and Cambridge have been either cancelled or revised.

A severely disrupted service is running between Hitchin and Cambridge, but travellers have been told to leave at least 60 minutes additional time to complete their journey.

This widespread disruption is expected until the end of the day.

In an update, National Rail said: “The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Luton and Bedford. Whilst they carry out their work, all lines are closed.

“As a result, trains between London St Pancras International and Leicester will be cancelled or revised.

“East Midlands Railway trains are unable to run in or out on London St Pancras International for the remainder of this evening.

“Passengers are advised not to travel. Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.

“Please note, this is also affecting London Northwestern Railway and Thameslink services.”

London Northwestern Railway services between Bletchley and Bedford are blocked.

Northwestern Railway told customers: “Your ticket can be used at no extra cost on Rail Replacement (supplied via Stagecoach) between Bletchley and Bedford in both directions until further notice.”

The incident between London St Pancras International and Bedford is also affecting East Midlands Railwa.

The train company have announced their services between London St Pancras, Nottingham, Sheffield and London St Pancras, Corby have been disrupted.

An East Midlands Railway spokesperson said: “The 16:40 EMR train from Corby to London St Pancras has been involved in a collision with 15:50 Nottingham to London St Pancras at Bedford South.

“We are currently on the scene and working with Network Rail to assist the emergency services.

“Further updates will be provided as soon as more information is established.”
