The British businessman urged the government to “reboot and get on” after Sir Keir Starmer resigns and advocated closer ties with the EU.

He told Times Radio: “But I’m not hopeful under this government with this ideology, with this obsession about now actually taxing the rich, and not actually being able to pay for it at the same time as running lunatics like Miliband, who want to go and get to net zero faster than anybody else.”

Mr Miliband is in the running to become Andy Burnham’s chancellor should the former Manchester mayor succeed Sir Keir.

But some Burnham allies have said putting the left-winger in the Treasury would spook the money markets.

Other candidates like Wes Streeting or Yvette Cooper are increasingly seen as a safer option.

Kemi Badenoch ramped up the pressure to abandon Net Zero commitments after voters backed more drilling for North Sea oil and gas.

The Tory leader told Mr Miliband it was “common sense” to use the UK’s resources to boost jobs and tax receipts.

She said that the by-election in Aberdeen South result sent a message on behalf of the country that it is “madness to make ourselves poorer” by importing energy supplies.

Badenoch said the campaign in Aberdeen South had been about “thousands of jobs in oil and gas across our country”.

She added: “Energy security is national security. They know it is common sense to use our own oil and gas rather than importing it from overseas.

“They know it is madness to make ourselves poorer, weaker and more dependent at a time when even the Government’s own intelligence says we are under threat.

“The first duty of any Government is to keep its people safe. The Conservative Party will always put Britain’s security first.”
