Netherlands vs Morocco preview

The Netherlands and Morocco clash in front of 53,000 fans in a hot and humid Monterrey for a place in the World Cup last 16.

In truth, both nations can rightly feel aggrieved with how the draw has fallen. This tie would not look out of place in the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, there is a big reward on offer, with the winners securing a last-16 meeting against either South Africa or Canada.

Their group stages followed a similar pattern. The Dutch drew their opener with Japan before filling their boots against Sweden and Tunisia, scoring eight times across those two victories to qualify as group winners.

It was not too dissimilar for the AFCON champions, who began with a credible draw against Brazil before cruising past Scotland and Haiti to finish runners-up in Group C.

That has teed up a showdown between two nations in unbeatable form – quite literally.

Ronald Koeman’s side have lost just one of their last 15 matches in all competitions, scoring at least twice in 11 of those games.

History is on their side too. The Oranje have reached the quarter-finals in five of their last six World Cups and have not lost a World Cup match in 90 minutes since 2006.

No team has scored more goals at these finals, although their 10 have come from just 40 attempts and an expected goals return of 5.61. The question is whether they can sustain that overperformance.

Morocco clearly have their own love affair with this tournament after their stunning run to the semi-finals in 2022. They are also seventh in FIFA’s world rankings, one place above the Netherlands.

The Atlas Lions arrive on a sensational 32-game unbeaten run in all competitions and have already shown they can handle the big occasion, having dumped Spain and Portugal out four years ago.

Add in the difficult conditions in Monterrey, which are likely to suit them more than the Dutch, and Mohamed Ouahbi’s call for his players to believe they can win the World Cup suddenly doesn’t sound quite so far-fetched.

Netherlands vs Morocco tips and betting predictions

Tip: Netherlands to win and both teams to score (YES)

I think the free-scoring Dutch will edge this inside 90 minutes, but it certainly won’t be straightforward.

As mentioned, no side at this World Cup has scored more than Ronald Koeman’s men, who have been ruthlessly clinical, netting 10 goals from an expected goals return of 5.61. Central to that has been Brian Brobbey, whose two goals have given the Netherlands another dimension in attack.

The balance of this Dutch side looks spot on, and facing the likes of Japan and Sweden in the group stage should leave them better prepared than a Morocco side who enjoyed the easier route through.

That said, I do expect Morocco to get on the scoresheet. Both teams have scored in six of the Netherlands’ last seven matches, while the Atlas Lions haven’t failed to find the net since the AFCON final defeat to Senegal.

Bet: Netherlands to win and both teams to score (YES) at 7/2 with Betfair
