But despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man – who has been named as Young John Mongan – was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Now, cops have confirmed Martin Slezak, of Stanley Street, Welshpool, has been charged with the murder of Mongan.
The force confirmed that Slezak, 22, has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at court.
A statement issued by police said: “There will continue to be a police presence in the town centre over the following days.”
Dyfed-Powys Police said that Mongan’s next of kin have been informed.
A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson previously said: “We were called today at approximately 1.16am, to reports of a medical emergency on Church Street, Welshpool.
“We sent one emergency ambulance and an operations manager to the scene.
“Advanced critical care support was delivered by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service in a Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopter.”
