And Rooney was in the studio as Erling Haaland bagged a late winner for Norway in their last-32 clash with Ivory Coast.

But, at half-time, host Gabby Logan called for the former striker to be handed a new role by the BBC.

After an advert had been shown for drama series This City is Ours, the presenter realised Rooney was a fan of the show.

Logan, 53, said: “You’ve got a big smile on your face. You liked the first series of that, didn’t you?”

Rooney, who has hit out at England chief Thomas Tuchel’s decision to leave Cole Palmer and Phil Foden at home, replied: “Yeah, I can’t wait for the second one.”

Logan could then be heard laughing before adding: “Our TV reviewer will be back later.”

They had another comical exchange before the second half of the World Cup clash got underway.

Footage was shown of the raucous crowd at a screening in Ullevaal Stadion following Antonio Nusa’s stunning opener for Norway.

As the wild celebrations were shown, Logan said: “They are loving it. A beautiful midsummer’s night there in Oslo.”

The Match of the Day favourite then aimed a remark at Rooney, suggesting: “It won’t get dark tonight, Wayne. Your kind of place!”

He responded: “I’ve said in the last few games that I want to make it out to these kind of fan parks. That’s number one.”

Some fans headed onto social media and claimed the joke was a reference to Rooney’s love of partying.
