Ronaldo, 41, stepped up to take it, dreaming of giving his side the lead in their last-32 World Cup showdown.
But it did not even come close to going over or around the wall.
Instead, the ball whacked Pongracic right where it hurts after his big leap to block the shot.
Pongracic needed a few moments to get his breath back after the unfortunate incident.

But thankfully, he was able to carry on – albeit no doubt with a bit of pain downstairs.
And plenty of social media users had sympathy with the Croatian defender – or saw the funny side.
One said: “Marin Pongracic got hit by this Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick in the WORST place possible.”
Another wrote: “That’s gotta hurt oh my – full power Ronaldo free-kick hitting you right in the balls.”
A third added: “Oooof.”
And a final user typed: “Every guy just said oooooooo.”
