Canada vs Morocco preview
Things are about to get rocky for Canada as they meet Morocco for a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.
This is no doubt a significant step up in class for Jesse Marsch and his Canadian heroes against FIFA’s sixth-ranked side in Houston, away from home soil.
It took Canada until stoppage time to clinch a famous victory over South Africa, with Stephen Eustaquio rifling in the winner after a tentative battle devoid of much attacking quality.
They will need to step things up a gear and produce the performance of a lifetime if they are to continue this fairytale run. Their wins so far have come against Qatar and South Africa – both of whom sit outside FIFA’s top 55 nations.
Still, they will arrive having had an extra day’s rest, while the return of Alphonso Davies should help bridge the gap in quality between these two sides. The Bayern Munich star, 25, has not featured for his country since March 2025.

This is Canada’s first venture into the knockout stages, but Morocco have been here before – more recently than most, in fact, when beating Spain on penalties in the last 16 four years ago.
They went on to beat Portugal that year, and added another major European scalp to their collection this week by holding their nerve (just about) to dump the Netherlands out on penalties.
The Atlas Lions dominated much of that game and perhaps would have won it in normal time were it not for the heroics of Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. They have now extended their unbeaten run to 33 matches in all competitions.
It’s a tough ask for Canada up against the likes of Achraf Hakimi, Ismael Saibari, Brahim Diaz and Ayyoub Bouaddi, while things would not get any easier with France expected to await in the quarter-finals.

They were also unfortunate not to beat Brazil on the opening day and now sit sixth in FIFA’s world rankings.
