But his dream of bowing out with the biggest trophy of them all was brutally ended when Arsenal star Mikel Merino scored a 90th-minute winner.
Ronaldo won the Euros with Portugal in 2016 but never got his hands on the World Cup in a record SIX attempts.
Speaking before the match, he said: “It’s about enjoying it as much as possible.
“This will be my last World Cup, but let’s hope tomorrow isn’t my last game.”
