Some fans even dubbed it the “worst goal ever” in front of a stunned USA home crowd.

Charles De Ketelaere tormented USA in the first half with two goals to give Belgium a 2-1 lead.

He raced clear in the 57th minute to try and latch onto a through ball.

The Belgium striker was beaten to the ball by USA goalkeeper Matt Freese and the danger looked to have passed.

But he managed to get a toe in and poke the ball out of the American stopper’s possession.

Hans Vanaken was then left with the simple task of putting the ball into the empty net to give Belgium a 3-1 lead.

Former Fulham defender Tim Ream then missed his attempted clearance in a last-ditch effort to prevent the disastrous goal.

One fan wrote on X, “FIFA and home field advantage on your side and you give up the worst goal ever.”

Another said, “The US just gave the world a highlight to be admired for eternity: coughing up the worst goal of the tournament, maybe of all time.”

While a third wrote, “That’s the worst goal I’ve ever seen conceded.”

And another posted, “One of the worst goalkeeping mistakes at the World Cup ever.

“The US goalkeeper Matt Freese made one of the most unnecessary decisions, giving Belgium a free goal and potentially eliminating the US from its own World Cup.”

Belgium went on to win 4-1 with a late strike from Romelu Lukaku rounding off the scoring.

It meant the end of USA’s World Cup campaign as Belgium set up a clash with Spain in the quarter-finals on Friday.
