Argentina vs Egypt preview
Argentina return to the spotlight tonight, seeking successive visits to the quarter-final stages of the World Cup.
Lionel Scaloni’s side enjoyed a dream start to the defence of their trophy in the group stages, winning all three matches and scoring nine goals, with Lionel Messi filling his boots.
But things weren’t so smooth in what was supposed to be their most straightforward encounter of the lot against Cape Verde.
Things went according to script with Messi opening the scoring, grabbing his seventh goal of these finals in the process, but the Argentines sleepwalked through the remainder of the game before a 111th-minute Diney Borges own goal saved the holders.

Argentina won’t have enjoyed the extra time, and they’ll be disappointed to have created a measly xG of 1.67 against FIFA’s 67th-ranked nation.
Nevertheless, they are through and have now scored at least twice in each of their last 10 World Cup matches. They arrive in Atlanta as heavy odds-on favourites to overcome Egypt and tee up a quarter-final with the winners of Switzerland vs Colombia.
They’re unbeaten in their last 24 matches on neutral ground too, so it’s no surprise they’re expected to get the job done.
But Mohamed Salah and co might have something to say about that.
The Pharaohs are through to the knockout rounds for the first time in their history after finishing second in Group G before surviving a penalty shootout against Australia in the round of 32.
However, a three-day turnaround between Dallas and Atlanta, with Salah clearly not entirely fit, could be problematic. It’s also worth noting that Egypt have won just one of their 16 matches against CONMEBOL opposition.

Argentina to win to nil is my pick at 10/11 with Betfair.
Cape Verde gave the holders the fright they probably needed. It was all going far too smoothly heading into the last 32, so as strange as it might sound, that scrappy 120-minute win should renew their focus.
Lionel Scaloni’s side know how to shut games down too, with eight clean sheets in their last 11 matches. Egypt deserve huge credit for getting this far, but they aren’t exactly free-scoring, with three of their six goals at these finals coming in one game against New Zealand.
Mohamed Salah is still the obvious danger, both as scorer and creator, but he’s clearly not 100%. If Argentina are switched on, they should have enough to get through without conceding.
