AN ICONIC 90s rockstar appeared unrecognisable when he downed a beer on the big screen during the USA’s World Cup exit.

The co-hosts took on Belgium in the Round of 16 in a fixture fraught with tension over the controversial suspension of Folarin Balogun‘s red-card punishment by Fifa.

But that did not stop the crowd at Lumen Field in Seattle from enjoying the game to the fullest.

Play was brought to a halt for the second half hydration break, one of the additions for this World Cup that has sparked differing opinions among fans.

But it wasn’t just the players who used the opportunity to have a drink, with the camera panning to the stadium’s gigantic screen displaying grunge rock icon Eddie Vedder downing his beer.

The musician, 61, is famous for being the front man for Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Pearl Jam, one of the best-selling rock acts of all time.

The band are native to Seattle, and rose to prominence alongside other local acts like Nirvana and Soundgarden, forming the basis of the grunge rock genre.

And Vedder showed he still had bundles of that rockstar spirit as he chugged a can of beer – spilling a fair bit down his shirt – before balancing the empty tin on his head with a grin.

Fans loved the moment on social media, with one labelling him a “Legend!”

Another fan joked: “This is awesome but damn he spilled half the beer on himself lol.”

And a third fan sarcastically claimed it was: “The only highlight of the night.”

While the American star appeared happy in the stands, he was drowning his sorrows with the drink as USA trailed 3-1 to Belgium.

The European side would then add another courtesy of former Chelsea and Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku to seal a resounding win over the co-hosts.

Ironically, Vedder’s beverage of choice was Stella Artois, a Belgian beer originally introduced in Leuven.
