JUST for once, Scottie Scheffler may not be the man to beat at this week’s Scottish Open – and the same could apply to the obvious alternative, Rory McIlroy.

The player with the best credentials at the Renaissance Club is probably defending champion Chris Gotterup, who warmed up in style for his return visit with a stunning victory at the John Deere.

Thank you!

Gotterup shot a brilliant final round 61 to come from five back last Jattvibeday and record his third victory of the year – and provide this column with a highly-touted 16-1 winner.

Maybe that windfall is making Gotterup more appealing this week.

But at 28-1 the in-form American is hard to ignore. He equalled the course record by shooting a 61 here 12 months ago to launch his victory bid, so he really does tick plenty of boxes.

Scottish Open 2026 betting tips

McIlroy shared second place with Marco Penge last year, after winning here in 2023 and following up by finishing joint fourth. So his liking for this course is undeniable.

But since winning the Masters it has looked like the world No 2 is finding it increasingly difficult to raise his game for the non-Majors. This definitely feels like more of a tune up for Birkdale next week.

Scheffler will defend the Claret Jug next week, and he could also be distracted. He finished tied third here in 2023 but did not give the impression he was likely to better that any time soon when he finished a disappointing eighth a year ago.

That is not the case with Tyrrell Hatton, who looked like a certain future Scottish Open champion when he finished a close sixth at the Renaissance in 2023.

Hatton’s LIV involvement ruled him out of this event for the last two years, but he could take advantage of the peace deal that has allowed him, Jon Rahm, and the rest of the rebels to return to the fold.

Hatton’s share of third at the Masters and a tie for seventh in the US Open were terrific efforts. At 33-1 he looks an outstanding each way proposition.

Double US Open champion Wyndham Clark and 2024 Scottish Open winner Robert MacIntyre can be backed at the same odds, and both are worthy of strong consideration.

Penge has had health issues since that joint runner-up finish here last year propelled him to the same spot on the Race to Dubai rankings, just behind McIlroy.

But his T9 finish at last week’s BMW International suggested he is almost back to full fitness, so he could be worth a small interest at 66-1.

Bernd Wiesberger’s recent performances have suggested he is no has-been. The Austrian can claim a share of the course record of 61 with Gotterup and Ben An, and is also joint holder of the 72 hole record with MacIntyre.

A win in China earlier this year and solo third in Munich last week – along with his course knowledge – make Wiesberger the most attractive of the longshots at a readily available 200-1.

Isco Championship 2026 betting tips

The Isco Championship, where golf’s lesser lights are invited to play while the big boys are in Scotland, does not appeal as a great betting medium.

If you must have an interest, John Deere runner-up Max Homa is 16-1 to go one better. Lucas Glover looked the most likely winner through the first 54 holes last week. He looks the each way standout at 45-1.

The fourth women’s Major of the year, the Evian Championship, is much more intriguing.

Lottie Woad, who missed out on a play-off by a single shot here last year and has since stormed up to fourth in the world rankings, looks an eye-catching contender at 25-1.

World No 3 Hyo Joo Kim has just bagged her fourth win in her last nine starts at the Lotte Open in her native Korea. She will surely transfer that form to the Majors soon – and she is a generous-looking 22-1 to do it in  France.

Brooke Henderson, the Evian winner in 2022, also looks over-priced at 66-1, while another former winner here, Celine Boutier, falls into the same category at 50-1.
