BBC iPlayer‘s synopsis states: “Can accidental detective John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor crack the biggest puzzle of his life – finding his missing brother?”

The show stars the likes of David Mitchell as DCI James Taylor and Anna Maxwell Martin as Lucy Betts-Taylor.

And fans will be happy to know that they will be returning as their alter-egos once more, and there will be more episodes to come.

Yesterday the Beeb confirmed that the programme has been commissioned for another series.

Star of the show David Mitchell said: “I am delighted that Ludwig will be returning to solve more of Mark Brotherhood’s brilliant mysteries.

“I can’t wait to get started and have renewed the subscription on my denouement-learning app.”

Meanwhile BBC Director of Comedy Commissioning, Jon Petrie, added: “Ludwig is exactly the kind of smart, distinctive, audience-pleasing show we love at BBC Comedy.

“Sharp writing, a compelling story, big laughs and, naturally, a generous helping of puzzles.

“The team at Big Talk have crafted something truly distinctive and much-loved, and we’re excited to see what mysteries Ludwig tackles next.”

Kenton Allen, Executive Producer and CEO Big Talk Studios, said: “Ludwig has become one of those rare shows that genuinely cuts through — critically, commercially and internationally.

“We’re hugely grateful to the BBC, ZDF and ITV Studios for the confidence they’ve shown in greenlighting a third season ahead of the launch of series two.”

The series will be produced by Big Talk Studios (part of ITV Studios).

It comes after the drama, which has been dubbed ‘the best BBC series in years’ was ‘delayed’ – and fans had to wait over a year for new episodes.

Ludwig premiered in September 2024 and was renewed for a second series in October that year.

But the second series hasn’t even aired yet.

Back in February last year it was revealed that the second series will not start filming until September, meaning Ludwig wouldn’t be on air until the following year.

The delay for the audience was down to writer Mark Brotherhood needing time to craft the next six scripts, plus the availability of the show’s cast.

One insider told The Mirror: “Fans will have to sit tight because Ludwig won’t be back until next year.

“This level of sharp storytelling doesn’t happen overnight, and then everyone needed to be locked in for filming.

“But the good news is that the scripts are coming along nicely and it will film from September.”

Lugwig series two will be on our screens next month.

The official synopsis of series two reads: “Picking up from the end of series one, master puzzle-setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor (David Mitchell) is now a Crime Scene Consultant, working alongside DCI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola), on ‘impossible’ crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority.

“No longer having to masquerade as his brother, he’s openly more ‘Ludwig’ than ever – brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else. But John’s identical twin brother, James, is still missing, and now that he’s an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

“Of course, John won’t stop and neither will Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin), John’s sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James – a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home.

“One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun.”
