Nine days after the Southwest Monsoon entered the region, wetting the eastern edges of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, it has finally covered the entire region and remaining parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. The monsoon had arrived in the region on July 1 after a delay of a few days and had covered most parts of North-Western India by July 3 except for parts of Fazilka and Mutksar districts in Punjab and Sirsa and Fatehabad districts of Haryana. The advance of the monsoon had been held up along the Barmer, Jodhpur, Rajgarh and Bathinda axis for the past few days, even as many parts of both the states received varying amounts of rainfall. The weather department had predicted a continuous wet spell over many parts of the region till July 14.The monsoon normally enters eastern Himachal Pradesh on June 20 and moves into Punjab between June 25-30 and covers the entire state by July 5. In 2025, the monsoon, which was significantly above normal, had advanced through some parts of Punjab on June 22 and covered the entire state on June 26, while it touched parts of Haryana on June 24 and covered the entire state on June 29.According to a bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on June 9, the monsoon was active over Haryana during the past 24 hours, but weak over Punjab. Light to moderate rain occurred at most places in Haryana, while heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds were experienced at isolated places in the state. On the other hand, light to moderate rain occurred at isolated places in Punjab during this period. The monsoon is back in the green in Haryana, but remains below the long period average (LPA) in Punjab. From July 1 till the morning of July 9, Haryana received 41.7 mm rain against the LPA of 33.9 mm for this period, marking a surplus of 23 per cent.Punjab received 34.4 mm rain during this period against the LPA of 37.2 mm, accounting for a deficiency of seven per cent. The seasonal rainfall since June 1, however, is below the LPA 19 per cent in Haryana and 30 per cent in Punjab.Barring six districts spread across northern and central parts of Haryana, the monsoon has been above the LPA in all other parts of the state. Faridabad, Gurugram and Panipat have recorded the highest amount of rain since July 1, while Sirsa, which is deficient by 99 per cent so far, Ambala and Bhiwani received the least rainfall. In Punjab, the monsoon has been above the LPA in 10 districts and below the LPA in 12 districts. Pathankot, Faridkot and Gurdaspur are the districts that have received the maximum rainfall so far, while Fazilka, Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala have received the least amount of rain.
