The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Friday alleged that the government had adopted a “soft approach” towards a police officer convicted in the Jaswant Singh Khalra case and demanded the immediate lifting of the ban on “Satluj”, a film based on the life of the slain human rights activist. The SGPC raised the issue during a protest march from the Golden Temple Plaza to the Deputy Commissioner’s office and submitted a memorandum addressed to the Punjab Governor through Additional Deputy Commissioner Pallavi Mishra.SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami questioned the government’s “lenient approach” towards a police officer convicted in the Khalra case. He alleged that while efforts were being made to grant relief to convicted police officials, cases of Sikh prisoners who had spent long periods in jail remained unresolved. Referring to Balwant Singh Rajoana, Jagtar Singh Hawara and other Sikh prisoners, he alleged that successive governments had ignored issues concerning Sikh sentiments.Related news: In another case, Governor had pardoned DSP Jaspal Singh who killed Jaswant Singh KhalraKhalra murder case: On the loose, convicted DSP Jaspal still holds gallantry awardJaswant Singh Khalra case: Convicted ex-DSP released on bail in 2023 not found at address in jail recordsDhami described Khalra’s killing as an unparalleled sacrifice for truth and human rights.
