Foreign trips of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi are again in focus, with the BJP upping the ante on the recent absence of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha from India. The BJP today fielded spokesperson Amit Malviya to ask where Gandhi has gone for a foreign trip this time.“Rahul Gandhi’s foreign trip between 22 June and 13 July remains shrouded in mystery. Where did he go? Who did he meet? Who sponsored his travel and stay? These are legitimate questions that the Leader of the Opposition should come clean about,” Malviya said on his X handle. He said the public is entitled to know whether his overseas engagements involved meetings that could have a bearing on India’s political or strategic interests. This is not the first time the ruling party has expressed concerns over Gandhi’s undisclosed foreign trips. In May, Parliamentary Affairs, minister Kiren Rijiju had cautioned Gandhi and said he should follow the law and not blame action for violation of the law later.Rijiju had also said that of the 54 foreign trips of Gandhi in the past 22 years many have been undeclared.Under rules a Member of Parliament is required to intimate in advance the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha secretariats as the case may be if they have to travel abroad. Also Section 6 of Foreign Contributions Regulation Act requires elected lawmakers to disclose the sources of foreign travel funding and if they are accepting any foreign hospitality.Restriction on acceptance of foreign hospitality“No member of a Legislature or office-bearer of a political party or Judge or Government servant or employee of any corporation or any other body owned or controlled by the Government shall, while visiting any country or territory outside India, accept, except with the prior permission of the Central Government, any foreign hospitality?” states the Section. The BJP has often alleged that the spending on Gandhi’s foreign trips doesn’t match his known sources of income.BJP official X handle had on May 14 said, “Over 22 years, Rahul Gandhi made 54 traceable foreign trips across Europe, the US, the Middle East and Asia. Based on a bottom up estimation model, the estimated expenditure stands at nearly Rs 60 crore. However, across 10 assessment years, Rahul Gandhi’s declared cumulative income was only around Rs 11 crore. This raises one simple question: #WhoFundsRahul?”Over 22 years, Rahul Gandhi made 54 traceable foreign trips across Europe, the US, the Middle East and Asia.Based on a bottom up estimation model, the estimated expenditure stands at nearly ₹60 crore. However, across 10 assessment years, Rahul Gandhi’s declared cumulative… pic.twitter.com/04Qwk2toqb— BJP (@BJP4India) May 14, 2026
