Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party government is likely to convene the Monsoon Session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha in the first week of August.Amendments to the Sri Jaagat Jot Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act are likely to be considered during this session. This is a departure from the earlier thinking in the state government and the ruling AAP about convening a one-day Special Assembly session to discuss the issue that led to a standoff between the ruling party leaders and the Akal Takht Jathedar.According to information available with The Tribune, the dates of the session are expected to be announced this week. The monsoon session will begin in early August and could stretch up to a week. Sources in the government have said that discussions have started regarding the business to be discussed during the session, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann himself consulting his political advisors, officials, and cabinet colleagues. It may be recalled that on June 29, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj had summoned all Sikh MLAs before the Akal Takht and asked that the anti-sacrilege Act be amended within a month. The government is seeking additional time from the Akal Takht Secretariat to make amends, beyond the July 28 deadline announced on June 29. Being the final year of this Vidhan Sabha, this will be its last monsoon session.
