A sailor from Yamunanagar district was killed after a merchant vessel he was serving on came under a missile attack while leaving the Ukrainian port of Odesa on July 19.The deceased has been identified as Gurpreet Singh Bath, a resident of Panjeton village in Yamunanagar. He was among the 17 crew members on board the merchant vessel Golden Leo when it was reportedly targeted in the attack.Gurpreet’s father, Kirtan Singh, said his son was the family’s only child. He added that Gurpreet had got married about one-and-a-half years ago and is survived by his wife and their six-month-old daughter.The family received official confirmation of Gurpreet’s death through a phone call from the shipping company on Monday afternoon.The news left Panjeton village in mourning, with relatives and villagers gathering at the family’s home to offer condolences.The bereaved family has appealed to the Government of India to ensure the early repatriation of Gurpreet’s mortal remains so that his last rites could be performed in his native village.
