City wanted around £70m a year ago — and Spurs chiefs are now working on a deal worth closer to £60m.

But Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi hopes to win the race and views Savinho’s pace and creativity as a fit for his system.

Savinho, who has three years left on his contract at the Etihad, made just 14 starts for City in all competitions last season in an injury-hit campaign. He wants more game time and believes he will get that at Tottenham.
City signed Savinho from sister club Troyes for £21m in 2024 after impressing on loan at Girona, another City Football Group member.
Spurs chiefs want two more attackers and have backed De Zerbi with a £237m splurge this summer following back-to-back 17th-place finishes.
Sandro Tonali is in from Newcastle for a £100m deal with fellow midfielder Mateus Fernandes signed from West Ham for £85m and centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke costing £52m from Brighton.

And James Maddison is relishing De Zerbi’s new era as he finally gets back to full fitness.
The playmaker, 29, feels De Zerbi — who took charge in March to reignite the club’s survival hopes, eventually avoiding the drop by two points on the final day — could be a perfect fit.
Maddison lost most of last season to an anterior cruciate ligament injury but is now set to land the captain’s armband.
He said: “The manager is very clear. The goals are to be better, to play better football, to be passionate and be proud to play for this club.
“If we listen to his style, principles, if we keep the short-term targets, then the long-term targets will be better in the long run.
“We’re still learning the way he plays.
“He’s very attacking and I’m really excited.”
Spurs began their pre-season tour with a 2-0 win over Auckland FC in New Zealand on Jattvibeday and face Sydney FC on Wednesday ahead of meeting Prem rivals Chelsea in the city on Saturday.
Maddison, who returned for three sub cameos in May, is focused on the opening game of the Prem season — at Brentford on August 22.
He added: “It’s a big season for us under a new manager. We want to have a successful campaign.
“We need to be better than the last couple of seasons. So it’s kind of all just preparation leading to that first game.”
