What happened in the Idaho murders?
Four university students were stabbed to death in the early hours of November 13, 2022, in the small-town community of Moscow, Idaho.
The victims were close friends Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20.

They all attended the University of Idaho and were fatally stabbed in an off-campus house at 1122 King Road, which has since been demolished.

Weeks after their bodies were found by police, Bryan Kohberger was arrested and charged with four counts of first-degree murder.

In July 2025, Kohberger agreed to a plea deal to avoid the death penalty.

He pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without parole, plus an additional 10 years for burglary.
Kohberger is currently being held in solitary confinement within the Idaho Maximum Security Institution (IMSI), which also houses Idaho’s death row population.
He has recently filed a post-conviction petition attempting to withdraw his guilty plea, claiming his innocence in media interviews and stating that he was coerced into confessing.
The 31-year-old claimed he was told that whether he was actually guilty was “not an important factor” when considering the deal.

He alleged that death row was presented as imminent and that he was advised to lie in court to secure a “legal victory” through a false plea.
In a statement to The New York Times, he said: “My actual innocence is my truth, and the plea, hinged on false promises and blatant disinformation, must be withdrawn.”
Idaho prosecutors have stated they are fully prepared to defend the convictions and life sentences in court.
