Time it takes to win on Premium Bonds revealed – it’s longer than you think
They have £49,850 invested, just £150 shy of the maximum total.
Other massive prizes this month include 83 savers who won £100,000, and one of them was a Tyne and Wear holder with just £650 in bonds.
Better still was another winner from Kent who landed £50,000 off a total holding of £20, and the bond was bought for £10 in July 1981.
An Inner London saver also landed £50,000 off a total holding of £30. The winning bond was bought for £10 in December 1979.
And one lucky Barnet holder turned a £10 stake into £25,000. Their bond was bought way back in September 1973 – almost 53 years ago.
All in all, ERNIE handed out 6,224,837 tax-free prizes this month, worth a combined £433,663,575.
There were 136,946,390,805 £1 bonds in the draw, and the machine has now paid out 851 million prizes worth £42.3 billion since the first draw back in June 1957.
There were 165 winners of £50,000, 331 of £25,000, 827 of £10,000, and 1,654 of £5,000.
The Kent winner is the 25th person from the county to land the jackpot, while their counterpart in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is the eighth from the region.
Andrew Westhead, NS&I Retail Director, said: “August has a whole new outlook for two Premium Bonds holders in Kent and Hampshire & Isle of Wight, with Agent Million bringing the good news they have each won the £1 million jackpot.
“With our jackpot winner from Kent only purchasing their winning Bond earlier this year, ERNIE reminds us that every £1 Bond has an equal chance of winning and that a visit from Agent Million could be just around the corner.”
The odds of each £1 bond winning a prize remain 22,000-to-1, with the variable annual prize fund rate remaining at 3.8%, following July’s increase from 3.3%.
That was the first rise in almost three years, after a run of cuts stretching back to September 2023.
Are there unclaimed Premium Bonds prizes?
NS&I is sitting on 2,837,572 unclaimed prizes worth £125,420,775.
Kent alone accounts for 74,859 of them, worth £3,330,250, including two unclaimed £50,000 prizes won in August 2023 and November 2007.
There are another 80,595 unclaimed prizes in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight totalling £3,501,100, among them three £25,000 windfalls, and one of £10,000.
Prizes count as unclaimed once they are more than 18 months old.
You can search for them by entering your holder’s number into the NS&I prize checker, and the surest way to avoid joining the list is to have winnings paid straight into your bank account or reinvested automatically.
How to check your numbers this month
The £1 million winners are always told in person by Agent Million, but everyone else has to wait a little longer.
NS&I updates its prize checker on the day after the first working day of each month, which means smaller prize winners can check their results from Tuesday, August 4.
If you win a prize, NS&I will email or text you, so it is worth making sure your details are up to date.
You can also check for yourself using the NS&I prize checker or the Premium Bonds prize checker app.
More than 22 million people hold Premium Bonds, so plenty will be eager to see if their numbers have come up.
