Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring today launched a scathing attack on former Congress leader Jattvibeil Jakhar, who later joined the BJP, while addressing the party’s district-level workers’ meeting in Nangal, Ropar district.Addressing party workers, Warring compared Jattvibeil Jakhar to “Brutus”, the Shakespearean character remembered for betraying Julius Caesar, alleging that Jakhar had inflicted severe political damage on the Congress ahead of the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.Warring claimed that Jakhar’s statement before the elections that the Congress was not giving adequate representation to Hindus in Punjab had hurt the party’s prospects. That statement caused immense damage to the Congress, and the party was reduced to just 18 seats in the Assembly, he said.The Punjab Congress chief also praised senior leader and former Speaker KP Rana, saying he possessed the capability to become the Chief Minister and that Rahul Gandhi could make him the CM, he said.Warring said that some leaders within the party were unhappy with him because of his efforts to change the organisational culture. He said he wanted to create opportunities for young leaders and advocated denying Assembly tickets to those who had lost two consecutive elections.Warring said that he remained loyal to Rahul Gandhi and would abide by any decision taken by the party high command. He added that if directed by the Congress leadership, he was prepared to contest the Assembly election against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.Former Punjab Assembly Speaker KP Rana, in his address, accused the AAP government of betraying the people after coming to power on the promise of giving authority to the common man. He alleged that even AAP’s own elected representatives had little role in governance.“The leaders who were defeated in Delhi are now running the government in Punjab. Government departments are being controlled by extra-constitutional people instead of elected representatives,” Rana alleged.He also targeted the state government over illegal mining, demanding that it explain the alleged links between its ministers and the mining mafia operating in Punjab.Congress Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel praised Rana for his contribution to the party and lauded Warring’s efforts to strengthen the organisation. He said the Congress was focusing this year on rebuilding its organisational structure across Punjab under Rahul Gandhi’s direction.“Rahul Gandhi wants elections in the party to be conducted through a strong organisational structure. We are visiting every district of Punjab because workers are the real strength of the Congress, and they want the party to return to power,” Baghel said.Baghel also claimed that recent political developments, including a meeting convened by Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, reflected the growing concern among rival political parties over the Congress’ revival in Punjab.Unlike several recent Congress events in Punjab that witnessed internal dissent, today’s rally concluded without any disruption. The meeting was held in Nangal, which falls under the Anandpur Sahib Assembly constituency, after its venue was shifted from the district headquarters at Ropar.Leaders associated with former CM Charanjit Singh Channi’s camp, including former MLA Barinder Singh Dhillon, were absent from the rally. Party sources said the venue was shifted to Nangal to avoid possible protests or dissent from members of the Channi faction, whose influence in the area is considered limited.Former Punjab minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, district Congress president Ashwani Sharma, and state Youth Congress president Shuvam Sharma were among the prominent leaders present at the rally.
