Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur over a few places in the Western Himalayan Region during the week, the weather department said on Monday, even as Monsoon in the region continues to remain deficient.Fairly widespread rainfall is likely to occur over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on August 11 and 13, with the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall in these states, according to a bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on August 10.Areas lying along Punjab’s eastern border are likely to experience heavy rains, while western and southern parts will receive relatively lesser rain.Similarly, northern and eastern parts of Haryana would be wetter than the western parts.The IMD is also expecting fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, with heavy rain at a few places, over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Uttarakhand till August 16.Satellite images released by IMD on Monday show a dense cloud cover over Punjab and Haryana, as well as over Rajasthan and eastern Himachal.Over the past 24 hours, Monsoon was termed as normal over Punjab, but weak over Haryana, with light to moderate rain along with thunderstorms and lightning occurring at a few places in both the states. Day as well as night temperatures were normal in these states, the IMD added.While rainfall for the month of August so far has been surplus in Haryana by 59 per cent, it is deficient in Punjab by 33 per cent. Seasonal rainfall from June 1 onwards is deficient in both the states by 13 per cent and 32 per cent respectively.In Haryana, rains during August have been above the long period average (LPA) by up to 224 per cent in all districts except Ambala, Kaithal, Karnal and Panchkula, whereas in Punjab, the August rains have been above the LPA in only two districts — Muktsar and Patiala — with the shortfall in other districts ranging up to 83 per cent.
