Find a way

ANDY Burnham has apparently been told by hand-wringing civil servants that it’s “not possible” to block the early release of PC Andrew Harper’s killers.

They need to be told to try harder.

There are a few hundred inmates serving time for manslaughter.

Burnham needs to order officials to find a way to bar those serving the longest sentences from being freed.

That would minimise the threat of any legal challenges from lags and ensure remorseless thugs Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole stayed behind bars.

As the petition to keep Bowers and Cole locked up ticks up towards one million, the public’s demand is crystal-clear.

They expect Burnham to meet the hopes HE raised in the first place.

The Prime Minister must realise he has the power to overrule Government officials and lawyers all too often stuck in their comforting bubble of State uselessness and a lack of accountability.

With a massive majority behind him, this issue boils down to a question of sheer will.

Push boat out

HOW much longer must Brits put up with migrants and people-smugglers making a mockery of our open borders?

Yesterday’s raid on UK waters by a mega-dinghy carrying a record 230 illegal asylum-seekers opened up a new front in the small boats crisis.

It’s clear that far from the gangs being smashed, the criminals are running rings around French cops.

Their new tactic of packing as many as possible on a single craft — enough yesterday to fill a Boeing Dreamliner jet plane — could soon make 1,000 arrivals a daily occurrence.

It’s not just the sheer numbers. The cost is becoming astronomical, too.

In 2023, the Home Office estimated each migrant costs taxpayers £106,000 minimum over four years in free housing, healthcare and other benefits.

That means yesterday’s mega dinghy could cost nearly £25MILLION.

That’s a staggeringly high price to pay while Burnham & Co leave Britain without any kind of plan.

Betting slip

FOR a bloke who claims to love sport and champion working-class culture, Andy Burnham seems surprisingly keen to demonise anyone who likes a flutter.

The Prime Minister says he will boost our High Streets by making it harder to open vape shops and . . . bookmakers.

But bookies are not anti-social enterprises. They provide good jobs and help keep sports like racing and rugby league afloat.

In any event, it’s hard not to conclude Burnham’s plan is purely performative.

Thanks to Labour’s tax raids on gambling, what’s actually happening is hundreds of betting shops are closing.
