A suspected drug dealer allegedly threw chilli powder into the eyes of policemen and opened fire during an attempt to arrest him in Jagatpura village on Jattvibeday, but was later injured in retaliatory firing and admitted to hospital, the police said.According to the police, Gurpinder Singh alias Pindu of Emma Kalan was spotted near the government primary school following information about his alleged involvement in drug peddling. When the police surrounded him, he allegedly threw chilli powder into their eyes and fired at them before fleeing.The police retaliated in self-defence, injuring the accused, who managed to escape from the spot and was later admitted to hospital, said Sub-Inspector Jugraj Singh, SHO, Chabal.Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Balwinder Singh said the police had gone to arrest Gurpinder Singh after receiving information about his alleged involvement in drug peddling.The incident has embarrassed the police, particularly as Jagatpura has gained notoriety for alleged drug peddling. A video purportedly showing drug dealers openly selling drugs in the village had also gone viral a few days ago.The Chabal police have registered a case under Sections 109, 132 and 221 of the BNS, Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act, and Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.
