The 48-year-old wrote: “I kinda sorta put my acting career on hold the other day. It’s been something I’ve been petrified to do for years.
“Specifically, the fear was that I’d go broke and not be able to handle being out of the game. But I sent the definitive email.

“And gotta say, a huge wave of relief washed over me. Not sure what I’m going to do for money instead, or how I’m going to do it, but I just removed a humongous burden, one that I truly didn’t fathom the weight of until it was gone. Frustrated, fed up, fried.”
The post was met with surprise from fans who wished him well in whatever direction he chooses to go in next.

It didn’t go unnoticed, and David, who drew praise for his role as Isidor Rabi in historical drama Oppenheimer, returned to share his gratitude.
He wrote: “The love and encouragement re: my last post is overwhelmingly surprising. Acting professionally is a very different concept than the exercise of acting itself.
“I’ve enjoyed every single minute of exercising the muscle. I’ve enjoyed the fanfare. There was a time when being competitive and self-involved really served my pursuit. That time has passed.
“Much to MY overwhelming surprise. There will always be great joy in the exercise. But for me, the profession has lost its gleam.”
He then offered a glimmer of hope to those who want to see him on-screen again, telling actor Garret Dillahunt: “Ain’t over, rather, redefining my terms. Hoping to find a new, more rewarding passion. Me, my product, and [my] mentality is not working anymore. I want to try to be of service. No crystal ball.”
Seth Rogen, who starred with David in his smash hit Apple TV comedy The Studio, previously recounted on the Diary of a CEO podcast how his friend and co-star had previously threatened to quit acting to become a BMW car salesman.
The Studio star eventually talked him out of it and the following year David was cast in the critical and commercial Broadway 2022 hit Leopoldstadt.
David boasts an impressive roll of credits to his name from recent films Supergirl and Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere to 90s TV shows Monty and Chicago Sons.
